My main goal in painting is to make political, social and spiritual commentary in a way that is playful and fun to have around. My paintings are meant to enhance your home environment, (of course!) cheer you up, cause you to think, maybe to laugh. Done in what I call "Folk Art Fantasy" style, some are acrylic on canvas, some watercolour, gouache and ink on paper.
I grew up in the beauty of oak trees and yuccas in southern California's chapparrel, now long gone, replaced by freeways and McMansions. From the time I was a little kid, I drew and painted and made things every day. By high school, which had a fabulous art dept, the format was such that I took 8 art classes my senior year. The comaraderie and inspiration of working together with my fellow art students was exhilarating and very fun! There was no competition or criticism, only mutual encouragement. That ended with our graduation, and I couldn't wait to leave So. Calif. and head north, to Calif. College of Arts & Crafts, in Oakland.
I put myself through CCAC making custom ordered, one-of-a-kind, art-to-wear garments, and graduated with Distinction with a major in Fine Arts, emphasis in painting, in 1972.
Nancy-- My God, Girl, your blog is wonderful! I love your work, every painting. Every painting is a celebration of your imagination and free-flying spirit. I am envious of the fact that you have such a huge portfolio, and envious of the freedom and whimsical fun in your images. My own watercolors, when I do them, are pretty representational, which is how my art has always been and has always been the way I express myself. But I've always loved work like yours. My overriding comment on all your work: it's worth a lot more money than you're charging for it. If I weren't currently a little short of money, I would buy some of them myself! Maybe later this year... I love it! Love, "Bill C."
